Dandenong Ranges and Puffing Billy

Lush picturesque misty green hills, undulating rainforests, small local villages, boutique family owned tea shops, and a memorable trip aboard the famous Puffing Billy steam train dangling your legs out of the open, railed windows.

Itinerary

Only an hour away heading North East from the City is this volcanic region rising up to 600 meters above sea level, we firstly get to skyhigh for morning tea and amazing views. If you are up for a stroll its always inviting for a little walk amongst the beautiful acacias, eucalypts, rhododendrons, and other colorful species surrounding us. If not enough we continue to the Botanical gardens for a longer wonder through nature, and if art is your thing, nearby is a beautifully preserved  sculpture garden to walk through to also learn about an interesting man who traveled extensively and lived with indigenous locals for many years, retiring here taking up sculpture artwork all made by hand.

We move onto a small village with cute local shops selling antiques and handmade creative useful wares. The pies in the sky, as its called, are baked fresh and are a great Aussie loved idea for lunch. Onwards from here and we are in need to check out the lakeside, hopefully remembering to snap some photos by the historic bridge here.. pending our boarding the Puffing Billy early 1900s steam locomotive intensively well kept to the shiny England original standard, not an imitation, just as it was, every inch.

Puffing Billy Train

If time permits we visit the museum here and you will be left once aboard, and told how to safely hang your legs out of the windows too of course. Its a one way trip and you will be met at the last stop.

From here we try to spot a shy Lyre bird in the forest, or some wallabies, maybe wombats too, and for the bird lovers the crimson rosellas and king parrots, galahs and cockatoos love this majestic place too.
