Limestone stacks and cliffs on the Great Ocean Road shipwreck coast at dusk

Private Two Day Great Ocean Road Tour
from Melbourne

The Great Ocean Road rewards a slower pace. Two days means a night at Port Campbell, time in the Otways without watching the clock, and the stops the day trips drive past. Your party only, in a Mercedes-Benz, with a Melbourne-born guide, in English or Mandarin.

From $2,375 AUD per group · Up to 7 guests · Two full days, 9 AM starts · Door to door from your Melbourne accommodation

Day one: the inland run, then the shipwreck coast

We head west on the farmland backroads rather than the highway. First stop is a cafe at Colac, with a memorial park and fountain across the road.

Then up through the rolling hills until the Southern Ocean appears ahead, and down into Port Campbell, a very small town and where you stay tonight.

With the afternoon still ahead we work the shipwreck coast properly. Loch Ard Gorge, including the walk out to the Razorback. Gibson Steps, down to the base of the Apostles, which the day tours do not have time for. If everyone still has the energy, we carry on to what is left of the limestone arch at London Bridge.

Day two: the Otways, Apollo Bay and the winding part

After breakfast we take the scenic stops the one day trips miss. If you want more walking, there are quieter parts of the Otway National Park I can take you into.

Then down to sea level and into Apollo Bay, a small fishing village with award winning home made ice cream. And coffee, of course.

From there the road does what it is famous for, with photo stops along the way.

Lunch at Lorne, after a walk on the sand. There is a proper Aussie pub or a more casual cafe, whichever suits the group.

We will see surfers, and we will find wildlife, up in the trees and grazing beside the Otway National Park.

By mid afternoon I check how everyone is going, because there is a choice. We can continue to the Anglesea river and finish on the clifftop at the historic 1891 Split Point Lighthouse, or go to the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie at Bellbrae instead, subject to its opening hours. With two days there is time to fit it in.

About Me

My name is Andy Bonello

Your guide is Andy Bonello. He was born in Melbourne, in a small town out west near the gold fields, and he has guided privately since 2015 after years of running mini bus tours before that. He studied Mandarin and taught English in Taiwan, so the Mandarin on these tours comes from having lived in it rather than from a phrasebook. Family man, keen cyclist, and serious about good coffee.

He will tell you himself that he is not the stereotypical surfing Australian, having nearly drowned proving it, but he knows exactly where the semi-pros paddle out and you will usually see a few of them on the way past.

One day or two?

The one day tour reaches the Twelve Apostles and back, and it is a long day. Two days adds the night at Port Campbell, Loch Ard Gorge and the Razorback walk, Gibson Steps, the Otways, and time at Lorne and Apollo Bay a day trip cannot fit.

If the Grampians interest you as well, we run them as a separate tour. Grampians National Park hiking takes in Halls Gap, the Balconies and MacKenzie Falls, as a long day or over two days.
